How Long Do I have to Complete the Requirements for the Special Inspector Certification or CBO/CFM Designation?

Special Inspector Exams

You will have 3 years to pass all necessary modules and prerequisites to achieve special inspector certification. You won’t have to take these exams in any particular order, so you can make the decision on which module you want to assess yourself first. Don’t forget you may also take an exam a total of six times in a six-month period.

CBO/CFM Designations

You will have 18 months to pass all necessary modules and prerequisites to achieve special inspector certification. You won’t have to take these exams in any particular order, so you can make the decision on which module you want to assess yourself first. CBO/CFM Grace Period to Change to 18 months

Starting Jan. 1, 2020, candidates looking to obtain a Certified Building Official (CBO) or Certified Fire Marshal (CFM) designation will have 18 months to fulfill the exam requirements to achieve those designations.

Upon completing either your CBO or CFM, there is only one more exam to pass to achieve the other designation. The last exam does not have to be fulfilled within the 18-month timeframe as long as the existing CBO or CFM certification is current.

There are plenty of opportunities to take an exam. The Code Council allows certification exam attempts up to six times in a six-month period.

Designations can be reviewed and renewed through your account on myICC.
