Understanding Basic View vs Premium

Content Access Levels: Premium and Basic View

Access Levels

There are two primary viewing levels for accessing content across Digital Codes: Premium and Basic.  Available viewing options for individual titles can be discovered by hovering over a cover from the Find Codes category pages.

Users not signed, or users that do not have Premium subscription, see one of the two options below on hover.

A Premium user for an active title within their subscription sees a simplified view with trigger to open the Premium view.

Title labels

ICC displays the access level at the top of the page when you open a title.

There are four different labels.

  • Basic View: Provides read-only access to this content.
  • Basic Plus: Basic Plus allows controls to copy, paste and print this content.
  • Premium Lite: Provides access to features (Notes, Search, Sharing) for this content but does not provide access to features (Copy, Paste and Print) for this content.
  • Premium: Provides access to features (Notes, Search, Sharing, Copy, Paste & Print) for this content.

Basic View

Content

Most titles in the ICC digital library are labelled View as Basic. Guests (e.g. users who do not have an ICC account or subscription) and ICC Premium subscribers can read these titles online.

Available formats can be viewed by hovering over the cover of the desired title.

Basic view features

Color coding

Colored text highlights section changes compared to the previous version of the title.

Color schemes

  • Blue text shows code changes in international documents.
  • Red text shows code changes in US national and state documents.
  • Fuchsia text shows code changes in city or local documents.

Purchasing titles

Users with Basic view access can purchase a digital (PDF) or hard copy of a title.

  1. To purchase a product, open a document. The About this Title page displays.

  1.  For titles where additional formats are available, the green button shown below will direct users to the product page on the ICC storefront for purchasing.

Restricted features

Basic view users cannot:

  • copy and paste text from a title
  • print sections from a title
  • create or save in-text notes or annotations

Basic Plus

In some cases, the owner of a title asks ICC to provide text tools inside the Basic view. ICC labels these titles BASIC PLUS -- look for the BASIC PLUS label at the top of the screen when you open a title.

Users who open a BASIC PLUS title can copy and paste text and print sections.

Premium view

Content

Premium view gives users access to all Basic view content and more:

  • Premium-only titles
  • Bonus content

For more information, see How to Navigate Contents Across Premium Titles.

Premium-only content

With a premium subscription, users get access to exclusive content like Collections (bundles of related titles) and Commentaries.

Commentaries provide descriptions and explanations of every section in a title. Commentaries are available for each title in the I-code series.

Bonus content

In addition to a broader range of titles, Premium view provides users with Bonus content. These resources can deepen the user’s understanding of a topic or issue.

Bonus content consists of:

  • errata
  • code changes, interpretations, and revision history
  • code development process proposals under consideration

For more information about bonus content, see How to Navigate Contents Across Premium Titles.

Premium view features

Premium view gives users access to all Basic view features and more:

Copy and paste

  • Copy and paste text from any title section.

Print

  • Print one or more sections of a title. Select a section and then click the Print icon. You can print a section or a section with its sub sections.

Premium Lite

In some cases, the owner of a title asks ICC to remove the copy, paste, and print tools inside the Premium view. ICC labels these titles PREMIUM LITE -- look for the PREMIUM LITE tag at the top of the screen when you open a title.
