The IECC will remain a code (called the IECC), but will be developed under a standards development process, like the National Electrical Code. Consistent with current practice, meetings will be open to the public. Any interested party can participate in committee meetings and can be considered by the committee for membership on any work group that the committee creates. Any interested party can submit comments and comment on proposed changes through an online portal.
The IECC will continue to be developed on a three-year cycle, consistent with the other International Codes, and be integrated into Chapter 11 of the International Residential Code.
Although governmental members would no longer have the final vote on the process, they will continue to have a leading voice in the development process. Recognizing the important role of governments in the adoption and use of the IECC, the framework ensures that one third of committee membership and the voting committee chairs will represent the government regulatory category.
Governments continue to have the ultimate say on whether to adopt or amend model codes.
